DC Customer Choice Program

Buy Natural Gas from a Company You Choose

History
Washington Gas asked the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia (PSC) to provide its residential customers the opportunity to buy natural gas from energy companies selling gas in the competitive marketplace. The request was granted, and in January 1999, under pilot program status, thousands of DC customers began to buy their natural gas from retail energy supply companies.

Due to the program's success, Washington Gas asked the PSC to remove the program's pilot status. The Commission granted the request on February 21, 2001, and the DC Customer Choice Program was implemented on a full-scale basis.

Current Status
Washington Gas, as a regulated utility, is required to pass directly through to its customers the cost for the natural gas they use. Energy companies that sell gas in the retail market compete against one another for business, and some may offer price incentives that could result in savings for customers.

All residential customers in DC are eligible to enroll any month of the year.  The Customer Choice program provides customers the opportunity to shop around and compare prices and services. Customers choose the company that best serves their needs.

Regardless of where a customer buys gas, Washington Gas continues to deliver the natural gas to customers' homes and businesses - safely and reliably - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Washington Gas reads the meter and responds around the clock to natural gas emergencies.

Customer Billing Options
Depending on what billing services an energy supply company offers, a customer may receive a single bill - one that combines the energy supplier's charges and Washington Gas', or two separate bills. For simplicity, most energy supply companies place their charges on the Washington Gas bill, but customers should discuss the option with energy supply companies they are considering.
