District of Columbia Customer Choice Program

Buy Natural Gas from a Company You Choose

Under a Washington Gas program that began in 1998, and which is approved by the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia, businesses may purchase natural gas from licensed energy supply companies that sell natural gas in the competitive market place, or they may continue to purchase natural gas from Washington Gas, the regulated utility.

Washington Gas, as a regulated utility, is required to pass directly through to its customers the cost for the natural gas they use. Energy companies that sell gas in the retail market compete against one another for business, and some may offer price incentives that could result in savings for customers.

The Customer Choice program provides customers the opportunity to shop around and compare prices and services for natural gas. Customers choose the company that best serves their needs.

Regardless of where a customer buys gas, Washington Gas continues to deliver the natural gas to customers' homes and businesses - safely and reliably - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Washington Gas reads the meter and responds around the clock to natural gas emergencies.

All DC commercial customers are eligible to participate and may enroll any month of the year. Today, nearly 4,500 DC businesses choose to buy their natural gas from licensed energy supply companies that sell gas in the competitive marketplace.

Customer Billing Options

Depending on what billing services an energy supply company offers, a customer may receive a single bill - one that combines the energy supplier's charges and Washington Gas's, or two separate bills. For simplicity, most energy supply companies place their charges on the Washington Gas bill, but customers should discuss the option with suppliers they are considering.
