Converting To Natural Gas
Converting to natural gas is easy. Simply follow these five steps.
Any business within the Washington Gas service territory may be able to convert to natural gas. If your business is near one of our gas mains, you may be able to receive gas service at no cost, if you agree to convert some HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) equipment. However, in some cases, a conversion contribution still may be necessary to defer the cost of the installation.
Five easy steps to convert to natural gas:
- FREE Energy Analysis.
Call (703) 750-5900 or Email us to learn about the benefits of converting your facility to natural gas. We can let you know if gas is available to your building and provide you with a free energy analysis to help you determine which equipment should be converted. We will need information such as square footage of the facility, the type of equipment you are currently using and the fuel source, the size and age of your current equipment, and copies of at least 12 months of your electric, propane or oil bills. Once you determine which equipment will be converted, we can determine if a contribution is required.
- Contractor and Equipment Selection.
In order to begin the conversion process, you will need to send us a copy of a signed contract with the heating contractor who will be installing the natural gas equipment in your facility. The contractor must detail the number, type and BTU rating of the gas equipment you are proposing to install and provide a letter of intent* that also must be submitted with the contract to Washington Gas. If a contribution is required, it also must be included. The contract, letter of intent and contribution (if required) should be sent to:

- Design Phase.
All gas installations are subject to Washington Gas obtaining the necessary permits and easements. When Washington Gas receives the required information and permits, we will notify the installation contractor and proceed with the design and measurement for your gas service installation.
- Installation of Gas Service.
Washington Gas coordinates with the utility locating service in your area to mark the public underground utilities as required by law. You should locate and mark private underground utilities such as sprinkler systems or lighting systems prior to service installation. Finally, we will schedule the installation of your natural gas service. Generally, it takes approximately four to six weeks to have the natural gas service line installed from the gas main to your business. However, the length of time can vary depending on scheduling, terrain, permits, weather conditions and other factors.
- Meter Installation.
Once the installation of the underground line is completed, you will need to contact the installation contractor to have the interior gas piping installed and inspected. Make sure your heating contractor confirms the installation of the gas service with Washington Gas prior to removing your existing equipment. After your new equipment and piping is installed, you must call Washington Gas at 703-750-1000 to have the meter installed. Certain equipment may require separate metering (gaslights and back-up generators).
